It doesn't really 'hold up' in any sense compared to the rest, but the Z-levels are a very fun feature unseen in the rest of the series - and I think Sid Meier had little to do with this installment. I've come back to this game after playing modded Civ 4 modded and Civ 6. It might be my nostalgia talking but in retrospect these seem like good ass ideas and it's bizarre to me that this game isn't remembered at all by the vast majority of the civ community. Keep in mind this was all in a game in the late 90s that reviewed very badly.

In this game mode the coordinates for the maps synced up, so the mountains on the surface map poked through to the cloud map, and units could warp between them while keeping their coordinates to simulate flying up, digging down, going underwater, etc. The fantasy game mode had an underground map with Dwarven and undead civs, a surface map with human civs, an undersea map with an atlantean civ, and a cloud-map with a few civs who were flying bird-people. The sci-fi game had an earth-like planet, two orbital platform maps (one of which was over a gas giant and had a completely different tileset), and a rocky exoplanet map. In the janky fantasy and sci-fi games, the terrain was also incredibly different for each planet, complete with unique tilesets. Think like Beyond Earth and Civ VI running concurrently, and your empire on planet affecting your empire on the other, sending stuff between them, etc. It even had an alien civ on the new planet you could interact with as you learn the new map. Like, it had some janky science fiction and fantasy scenarios that had different planets, but it also had an "Extended original" game mode (that was 100% optional) in which a second planet unlocks when your spacecraft reaches it (where you would normally win a science victory). DAE remember "Civilization 2: Test of Time" that enabled concurrent play on up to 4 maps at once?
